Chaitra Amavasya March 2023: Amavasya, also spelled as Amavasai or Amavas, is the new moon day in the Hindu calendar. It is considered a significant day as many rituals are performed only on Amavasya Tithi.
According to Drik Panchang, Amavasya falling on Monday is called Somvati Amavasya and Amavasya falling on Saturday is called Shani Amavasya. Similarly, Amavasya falling in the month of Chaitra is known as Chaitra Amavasya.
This year, Chaitra Amavasya is falling on Tuesday, March 21. Since it will be observed on Tuesday, hence this day will also be called Bhoomi Amavasya. It is considered auspicious to take a dip in the Ganga, the most holy and sacred river of Hinduism, on this day.

It is believed that if the devotees will perform certain rituals on this day, they may be liberated from their Pitra Dosha.
- Chaitra Amavasya is considered dedicated to ancestors. That's why it is auspicious to offer holy water mixed with sesame seeds in the name of ancestors on this day. This will help in reducing Pitra Doshas as well as provide peace to the souls of the ancestors.
- Ganga bath has special significance on the day of Chaitra Amavasya. However, many people may not be able to manage to go to the river for a bath. In such a situation, while remembering Mother Ganga, take a bath by mixing Gangajal in water.
- There is also special importance of providing food to the needy and poor on this day. People can donate according to their capacity. This also reduces Pitra Dosh.
- Worshiping the Peepal tree on Amavasya day is also considered auspicious. People can offer Ganga jal or milk and light an earthen lamp for the peace of the ancestors’ souls.
