'Bharat' is unstoppable, says PM Narendra Modi as 'Make in India' turns 10
The Narendra Modi government highlighted a string of milestones on the 10th anniversary of its ambitious 'Make in India' initiative, launched in September 2014. The program has played a pivotal role in boosting domestic manufacturing, fostering innovation, enhancing skill development, and facilitating foreign investment, according to an official statement. Launched on September 25, 2014, the Narendra Modi government's 'Make in India' drive—aimed at promoting domestic production to transform India into a global manufacturing hub—turned 10 on Wednesday. Highlighting several key milestones achieved under Make in India, the central government said the programme has played a pivotal role in boosting domestic manufacturing, fostering innovation, enhancing skill development, and facilitating foreign investment, with the completion of "a landmark decade of empowering the country" to become a global manufacturing hub under PM Modi's leadership.
"Today is an occasion to salute each and every one of you who has made this initiative a roaring success. Each of you is a pioneer, visionary and innovator, whose tireless efforts have fuelled the success of ‘Make in India’ and thereby made our nation the focus of global attention as well as curiosity," PM Modi took to professional networking platform Linkedin on the occasion.
"It is the collective drive, relentless in nature, which has transformed a dream into a powerful movement... The impact of ‘Make in India’ shows that Bharat is unstoppable," he wrote.
"Make in India illustrates the collective resolve of 140 crore Indians to make our nation a powerhouse of manufacturing and innovation," PM Modi wrote in a separate post on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter).

Among other noteworthy achievements under the programme, the Prime Minister highlighted that defence exports in the country had reached Rs 21,000 crore from Rs 1,000 crore, reaching more than 85 nations.

- Foreign Direct Investment (FDI): Since 2014, India has attracted a cumulative FDI inflow of $667.4 billion (2014-24), an increase of 119 per cent over the preceding decade.
- Production Linked Incentive (PLI): Introduced in 2020, the PLI schemes have led to Rs 1.3 lakh crore ($16 billion) in investments and a significant boost in manufacturing output of Rs 10.9 lakh crore ($130 billion), creating more than 8.5 lakh jobs directly and indirectly, as of June 2024.
- Exports & Employment: Merchandise exports from India crossed $437 billion in FY24, with an additional Rs 4 lakh crore generated due to the PLI schemes. Total employment in the manufacturing sector increased to 64.4 million in FY23 from 57 million in FY18.
- Ease of Doing Business: India rose from its 142nd rank in 2014 to 63rd rank in 2019 in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report.
- Semiconductor Ecosystem Development: Semicon India Program, worth Rs 76,000 crore, aims to provide an impetus to semiconductor and display manufacturing by facilitating capital support and technological collaborations.
- National Single Window System (NSWS): Launched in September 2021, this platform simplifies the investor experience, integrating clearances from 32 ministries and departments and 29 states or Union Territories.
- PM Gatishakti: A GIS-based platform with portals of various ministries and departments, the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP) is a transformative approach to facilitating data-based decisions related to integrated planning of multimodal infrastructure. The plan was launched in October 2021.
- National Logistics Policy (NLP): Aimed at reducing logistics costs and increasing efficiency, the NLP (launched in 2022) is key to making Made in India products more globally competitive.
- Industrial Corridors and Infrastructure: The development of 11 industrial corridors under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme has seen the approval of 12 new projects with a projected investment of Rs 28,602 crore.
- One-District-One-Product (ODOP): The government's ODOP initiative, aimed at promoting indigenous products and craftsmanship across the country, has fostered local economic development with Unity Malls being set up in 27 states to provide platforms for these unique products.
- Startup India: With the intent to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and encouraging investments, the Modi government launched the Startup India initiative in January 2016. As of June 30, 2024, the number of recognised startups in the country stood at 1,40,803, creating more than 15.5 lakh direct jobs.
As India moves into its next decade of growth, Make in India 2.0 focuses on furthering sustainability, innovation, and self-reliance, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry wrote in a statement.
With strategic interventions in renewable energy, green technologies, and advanced manufacturing, the Make in India initiative is ensuring that Indian products meet the highest global standards, it added.
