Air purifier makers under lens as NCR air quality worsens; Centre to conduct random checks at outlets & factories

Amid a worsening quality of air in and around the national capital region, the government is planning strict surveillance on air purifier manufacturers and suppliers including random checks. Typically, the quality of air in the Delhi NCR is impacted around this time of the year owing to a combination of factors including changing weather conditions and the burning of stubble in the city's outskirts. The government will ensure strict vigilance on the suppliers to ensure the quality of products and services for consumers, with steps such as increased surveillance and random sampling at factories and retail outlets.

The consumer should not buy such products without proper bills and ISI marks in place and must file any complaint about substandard quality using the NCH portal, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare told Zee Business. 

Surveillance will be increased through the BIS route, making it mandatory for the manufacturers of air purifiers to meet the norms, said Khare. Any instance suggesting failure to meet the claimed quality will lead to strict action on the manufactured, the official said.

Her remarks come amid a reported spike in the demand for air purifying devices with consumers anticipating a further deterioration of air quality.

As per the Quality Control Orders (QCO), the detection of a substandard filter in a device will lead to strict action under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act.

Air purifier makers have been directed to provide information on the designated service centres clearly for the consumer.   

The authorities have also urged the consumer not to purchase a purifier without the proper ISI mark.
