The other three athletes who have been chosen for the highest Indian sporting honour today (Thursday, January 2, 2024) are world chess champion D Gukesh, men's hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh, and para-athlete Praveen Kumar.

Bhakar won bronze medals at the Paris Olympics' 10m air pistol individual and 10m air pistol mixed team events.

In the same Olympics, Harmanpreet led the men's Indian team to a historic bronze medal.

Praveen is a para high-jumper, who emerged as the T64 champion at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Gukesh emerged as a sensation, beating China's Ding Liren, in the final of the World Chess Championships in November-December 2025.
