All India Sugar Trade Association has recently said that India will likely need to import around 1.5 million tonnes of the sugar in 2016-2017 season.

"With carry over stock of 75 lakh tonnes from 2015-16 SS and expected sugar production of 234 lakh tonnes in 2016-17, there will be enough sugar available in 2016-17 SS to meet the domestic demand of about 256 lakh tonnes (considering a demand growth 2.5%) in the next season. There will be carry forward stocks of around 52 lakh tonnes for 2017-18 sugar season, as on 1 October, 2017."
