The government may soon introduce a new privacy law that would require companies to seek fresh consent from users every time they make changes to their terms of service, update their services, or alter the way they process user data. The new law would also mandate that companies process personal data only for the purposes for which consent has been obtained. This would give users more control over their personal data and help to protect their privacy.

Data Protection: The Data Protection Bill was first drafted in November 2022. After this several public consultations took place, after which the second bill has been drafted. In April this year, the Center told the Supreme Court that a new data protection bill would be introduced in the monsoon session. The court was actually hearing a case related to WhatsApp's 2021 privacy policy, in which it also came to the question whether it violates the right to privacy of the users.

Union telecom and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said that the joint parliamentary committee which went through the original draft suggested 88 amendments to a bill of 91 sections, which led the government to decide that there was "no option" but to withdraw the original bill completely.
The government in August withdrew the Personal Data Protection Bill from Lok Sabha and said it will come out with a set of fresh legislations that will fit into the comprehensive legal framework.
