The Centre is mulling to develop 'One Nation, One Policy' for organ donation and transportation in the country. This will make organ donation and transplantation easier. Earlier the organ donation policy of the states required the domicile of the needy person to undertake the organ donation. Now the needy person can go to any state of the country and register for getting organ and also get the transplant done. The Centre has decided to do away with the domicile requirement and all the states have been informed about the same. Watch this special report on India 360.

Every year more than 1 lakh people die in the country just because they can not find any donor. Apart from St George's Hospital in Maharashtra, the state government has set up 3 regional authorisation panels to speed up transplant applications. Annually 10 thousand kidneys, 1 thousand livers can be transplanted. 50,000 liver transplants are required annually. One death occurs in the country every 8 minutes due to accident, in such a situation the brain becomes dead. At least 8 to 10 lives can be saved by organ transplant. Who can donate organs?
