Under the new policy, vehicles older than 10 years for diesel and 15 years for petrol will face a structured disposal process. Instead of immediate confiscation and scrapping, the government will implement substantial fines, encouraging owners to take their old vehicles off the road voluntarily.

The old and abandoned vehicles caught fire in Mumbai on Friday. The incident happened at Borivali Bridge. The fire brigades have not arrived yet at the spot. The reason of fire is yet to be ascertained. While speaking to ANI, a local said, "These cars are parked here for 2 years now."

According to the policy, the approval will pave way for mandatory disposal of commercial vehicles, like trucks, autos, buses and tempos among others, that are 20 years old from April 1, 2020, coinciding with the implementation of the BS-VI norms. It also says that better reward or incentives will be given to those who will go ahead to scrap their 20-year-old vehicle.
