After all, Metro Railway has limited sources of earnings as it doesn't carry freight. Finally, a decision was taken to impose a surcharge of Rs 10 for people availing the last train. This was to come into effect from December, but was kept in abeyance due to various reasons," a senior Metro Railway official said.

On Independence Day, August 15, Kolkata Metro will operate fewer services. The Dakhineswar-New Garia line will run 188 services, reduced from the usual 288, with regular timings from 6:50 am to 9:40 pm and a special night service at 10:40 pm. The East-West corridor's Sector 5-Sealdah section will have 90 services instead of 106, and the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section will run 90 services compared to the usual 130.
