Since last fiscal, average sugar price has witnessed downward trend, due to uptick in production. In FY18, sugar production in India rose by 57% on a yearly basis to 32.5 million tonnes.

"In order to incentivize the mills to clear their dues, CCEA has also decided that the approved soft loans will be provided to those units which have already cleared at least 25 per cent of their outstanding dues in the sugar season 2018-19," the statement said.

"With carry over stock of 75 lakh tonnes from 2015-16 SS and expected sugar production of 234 lakh tonnes in 2016-17, there will be enough sugar available in 2016-17 SS to meet the domestic demand of about 256 lakh tonnes (considering a demand growth 2.5%) in the next season. There will be carry forward stocks of around 52 lakh tonnes for 2017-18 sugar season, as on 1 October, 2017."
