Income Tax Department informed that there is no special drive to re-open cases of mismatch, and media reports alleging that large-scale re-opening is being undertaken by the CBDT are completely misplaced. Apprehensions are about retrospective taxation in this matter and re-opening of cases on issues pertaining to HRA claims is completely baseless

The government said that the revised allowance under 7th Pay Commission will come into effect from July 1, 2017. The recommendations allowance will benefit 34 lakh Civilian employees and 14 lakh Defence Forces personnel.
The Cabinet decided that HRA will not be less than Rs 5400, Rs 3600 and Rs 1800 for X, Y and Z category of cities respectively as per 7th Pay Commission. The HRA benefit 7.5 lakh central government employees.

As the House Rent Allowance at the reduced rates may not be sufficient for employees falling in lower pay bracket, it has been decided that HRA shall not be less than Rs 5400, Rs 3600 and Rs 1800 for X, Y and Z category of cities respectively.
