The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released its annual report for the financial year 2022-23. The report shows that the number of fake Rs 500 denomination notes detected increased by 14.4% to 91,110 pieces in FY23. However, the number of fake Rs 2,000 denomination notes detected decreased to 9,806 pieces. Counterfeit notes of Rs 20 and Rs 500 (new design) increased by 8.4% and 14.4%, respectively. While, counterfeit notes of Rs 10, Rs 100, and Rs 2,000 declined by 11.6%.

Fake notes of Rs 2,000 increased by 55% in 2021-22 over the previous fiscal year. Recently the data has been released by RBI. Out of the total Fake Indian Currency Notes detected in the banking sector, 6.9 per cent were detected at the RBI and 93.1 per cent at other banks.

Around 302 fake currency notes were recovered from their possession, and the fake currency notes were of Rs 2,000 denomination, said the Chamoli police, which is reportedly investigating the case and has registered an FIR at Karnprayag Kotwali police station of Chamoli.

Fake bank notes are a big worry. In India currently there are 9 currency notes namely old Rs 10, new Rs 10, Rs 20, old Rs 50, new Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 200, Rs 500 and Rs 2000. The ATMs only dispense from Rs 100 to highest denomination Rs 2000.
