The cases of diabetes are increasing in the country and should the government intervene in it at the policy level. The etiology of diabetes in India is multifactorial and includes genetic factors along with environmental influences such as obesity associated with rising living standards, steady urban migration and lifestyle changes. Yet, despite the high incidence of diabetes in India, no nationwide and few multi-centered studies have been conducted on the prevalence of diabetes and its complications. The studies that have been conducted are also prone to potential error because the heterogeneity of the Indian population with respect to culture, ethnicity, socio-economic conditions means that extrapolation of regional results may give inaccurate estimates for the country as a whole.
