Crude palm oil has hit a record import of 9.31 lakh tonnes in November, which increased by 50% compared to last year. The import of RBD palm oil increased to 2.02 lakh tonnes in November, which increased by 70% compared to last year. The import of sunflower oil increased by 1.57 lakh tonnes in November. The import of crude soybean oil fell to 2.29 lakh tonnes. Total edible oil import increased by 34%.

In an attempt to give relief to the consumers, the government on Wednesday reduced the benchmark import price of edible oil. In this regard, the import tariff value on crude palm oil was reduced by $87 to $1,136/tonne, while crude soya oil import tariff value reduced by $37 to $1,415/tonne.

India relies on imports for 70 percent of its edible oil consumption, up from 44 percent in 2001/02. India raised import tax on crude soyoil to 35 percent from 30 percent, and on crude canola oil and sunflower oil to 35 percent from 25 percent. Import duty on refined soyoil, canola oil and sunflower oil was raised to 45 percent from 35 percent.
