The import bill of edible oil increased by 34%. Last year there was an import bill of about 1.17 lakh crores. In 2021-22, 140 lakh tonnes of edible oil was imported. Last year 131 lakh tonnes were imported. About 41 lakh tonnes of sunflower-soybean were imported. About 79 lakh tonnes of palm oil was imported in November-October.

In a bid to provide relief to consumers, the Centre has asked the edible oil associations to ensure reduction in the maximum retail price (MRP) of cooking oils by up to Rs 15 per litre, with immediate effect. The Union government has also advised the manufacturers and refiners to reduce prices of edible oils immediately and pass the benefits to consumers. Last month also, companies had reduced the price by Rs 10 to 15 per litre.
