A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck northwest China's Gansu and Qinghai provinces on December 18th night. Tragically, at least 116 lives have been lost, with 105 fatalities in Gansu and 11 in Qinghai. The quake injured over 230 people and caused widespread damage, including collapsed houses, damaged roads, and disrupted power and communication lines. Search and rescue operations are ongoing in affected areas.
Authorities have mobilised an array of emergency responses, but rescue work could prove challenging in subzero temperatures. Most of China is grappling with freezing temperatures as a cold wave that started last week continued to sweep through the country.
Earthquakes are common in western provinces such as Gansu, which lie on the eastern boundary of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, a tectonically active area.
