Motilal Oswal says Cadila Healthcare received Restricted Emergency Use approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for the use of ‘Virafin’, Pegylated Interferon alpha-2b (PegIFN), in treating moderate COVID-19 infections. Considering the drug’s potential in reducing the need for supplemental oxygen and its better efficacy against other viral infections, Motilal Oswal says it expects sales of Rs 2.5 – 3 bn on an annualized basis.

Cadila Healthcare reported a healthy set of results for Q3 FY21, though earnings missed estimates marginally, following a marginal miss in revenue. Consolidated sales at Rs 3796 cr grew by 4% yoy, driven by strong growth in India business, up 19.5% yoy. While the US business was weak, declining by around 4% yoy due to a weak flu season coupled with some inventory correction.

Torrent Pharmaceuticals to Cadila Healthcare, Natco Pharma to IPCA Labs results preview: Q3 FY21 is expected to have been a good quarter for Indian pharma companies. Some of the benefits from H1 FY21 are expected to have boosted growth. Sales of the companies we cover are expected to have risen 9.2% to Rs 157 bn, driven by a strong rebound in India sales, greater demand for APIs and stable pricing in the US. EBITDA margins may be high due to less promotional and travelling expenses associated with the domestic business.

CLSA highlights that it was a muted month for pharma companies as November sales disappoint for the Domestic Market. CLSA says it was a strong month for IPCA Labs; gains from integration of acquired brands for Dr Reddy. Falling active cases meant sales of Covid treatment drugs moderated for Glenmark / Cipla (+16%/-24% MoM). Glenmark saw the highest growth in its coverage in November, but excluding these products, its portfolio fell 1% YoY. Cipla’s core growth was a smaller 5.9% YoY.

Among the top 30 companies Mylan clocked the highest growth of 144% for November followed by Glenmark Pharma(+11%), IPCA Labs (+10%) and Ajanta Pharma(+10%) clocking double digit growth while Novartis, Micro, Indoco Remedies, FDC & Mankind Pharma were impacted the most. With 144% growth for the month (sales of Rs 920 m), Mylan has been the standout performer for the month primarily aided by Rs 540 mn sales contribution from its COVID treatment drug, Desrem. Notably, Desrem was the second largest selling brand in IPM for Nov20. Sun Pharma, Cipla, Cadila Healthcare, Torrent Pharma, DRL, Eris Life were among some local listed players that clocked a single digit growth.
