Rain lashed most parts of Odisha on Saturday even as the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression, the IMD said.Of the 30 districts of Odisha, 26 districts have experienced rainfall in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Saturday.

The Department of Meteorology said on Thursday that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal was likely to move closer to the east coast of Sri Lanka and intensify further into a cyclonic storm.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards with a speed of 10 kmph in the past few hours. As of 23:30 hours IST on Tuesday, it was centred over the same region near latitude 7.5°N and longitude 82.6°E, about 190 km southeast of Trincomalee, 470 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 580 km south-southeast of Puducherry and 670 km south-southeast of Chennai.

Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to witness moderate to heavy rainfall beginning early next week. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu between Tuesday and Friday. A low-pressure area is also likely to develop over Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal and move towards the coastal region in Tamil Nadu intensifying into a storm.
