Born in 1924 in the family of a school teacher in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Vajpayee was a student of political science and law and had developed a keen interest in foreign affairs in college.
A prime minister for six years between 1998-2004, Vajpayee, a Bharat Ratna awardee, died in 2018 at 93 years of age.

Special prayers were offered on the 1st death anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Odisha’s Bhubaneshwar on August 16. Locals paid tribute to late Vajapayee. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the former prime minister of India and senior BJP leader. He served the nation for thrice times. He died on August 16 last year due to respiratory disease.
