For years we have witnessed a tense rivalry between Samsung and Apple in the premium smartphone segment. Now, we are witnessing similar kind of competition between two Chinese smartphone manufacturers - Realme and Xiaomi - in the budget segment. Recently, Realme launched its first premium smartphone in India, the Realme X, just two days before Xiaomi unveiled its first flagship device the Redmi K20 Pro in the country. The latter has heated up the competition by announcing its entry into the 64MP rear camera game, weeks after its rival had teased a similar device.
The Chinese smartphone manufacturer's sub-brand Redmi shared an image taken from its first handset featuring a 64MP camera sensor on Monday. The image was shared on company's official Weibo account. The teaser shows an image with a zoomed-in section that shows details around a cat's eye.
The same image was also shared on Twitter by Xiaomi Global Vice President and India MD Manu Kumar Jain on his Twitter account. "#64MP camera phone! Redmi is entering the era of 64MP! #Xiaomi #Redmi," Jain's tweet read. Neither Jain nor Redmi shared any other detail about the camera or the smartphone it would make its debut in.
However, if the reports are to go by, the camera can make its debut in the Redmi Note 8 Pro, which would be a successor to this year's Redmi Note 7 Pro that introduced the 48MP camera on Redmi phones.
The other major brands that are reportedly working on similar camera are Realme and Samsung. Only a few weeks back, Realme CEO Madhav Sheth had shared a few images clicked by company's first 64Mp camera. Realme phone with 64MP camera is likely to use Samsung's new 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 image sensor with 4-in-1 pixel technology to merge four 0.8 micron pixels into a single 1.6-micron pixel to deliver 16Mp photos in low-light settings and 64MP images in brighter conditions.
There is a chance that the camera might make its debut this year itself.
