With this feature, users can tag a particular contact in their status updates and share an instant mention notification with a specifically mentioned person. A mention notification will make it easier for users to get involved with their intentional audience and re-share the status. As per the report, this feature is still in the testing phase and has been launched for the beta testers.

WhatsApp has designed a specific button for the usage of this feature. Users will find this button in the caption bar while trying to share images and videos through status updates. This option will be accessible to users prior to publishing the status, hence they can choose contacts which they wish to mention in the status. Similar to Instagram, as users mention a contact, the mentioned contact will get an instant notification where they will be notified that they have been mentioned to a status update.

Furthermore, they will also get a WhatsApp text from the user notifying them about their mention in a status update. We should know that these mentions will be exclusive to the concerned parties, so other viewers of the status update will not be able to see the mentioned contacts. Notification alerts and texts will only be sent to the mentioned individual. It will ensure discreet interaction as mentions are not for public view.

Also, irrespective of the sender's privacy settings, mentioned individuals will automatically get the status update, which means that vital status updates mentioning specific contacts will never be missed as they are always added as recipients of the status update. Replicating Instagram, mentioned individuals will be able to re-share the status update with their audience via a new re-share tab within the status screen extending the range of the content. However, unlike Instagram, if a mentioned individual re-shares the status update, the identity of the original sender will remain hidden.
