Twitter, Facebook and Instagram news: Social media companies, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, may lose their status as 'intermediaries' and allegedly become liable for criminal action in India. If reports are to be believed they can even be 'banned' as most of them have defied government rules and have not followed measures suggested by the Indian government earlier in February. The development assumes significance in the backdrop of government announcing certain checklist for governing these platforms in late February.

As per an NDTV report, which quoted government sources, the Centre has put these social media giants on notice and warned about their failure to comply with a set of guidelines, time window for which is about to end in a day.
As per the same source, if the government doesn't receive a compliance report by May 25, the companies would be considered to have “forfeited their status as an intermediary” as per the rules notified.
As per the report, on February 25, the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEITy) had given a three-month deadline to all social media platforms to comply with the new rules. This window is closing today.
The rules include appointment of compliance officials, giving their name and contact address in India, complaint resolution, monitoring of objectionable content, compliance report and removal of objectionable content. So far, no company except for one has reportedly appointed any such officials.
