TikTok, UC browser, ShareIT among 52 Chinese apps Indian intelligence agencies want you to stop using

Popular apps like TikTok, UC browser and ShareIT are among 52 Chinese apps that Indian intelligence agencies want people to stop using. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the agencies have asked the government to either block or advise people to stop use of 52 mobile applications linked to China over concerns that these weren’t safe and ended up extracting a large amount of data outside India.

These include video conferencing app Zoom, short-video app TikTok, and other utility and content apps such as UC browser, Xender, SHAREit and Clean-master. The agnecies believe that threat attached to these apps will have to be assessed one by one.

Out of these, Zoom has already been in news for security reasons. The government had issued an advisory on use of Zoom on the recommendation of the national cybersecurity agency – Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-in). The company had responded to the home ministry advisory, insisting that it was serious about user security.
