Digital India is a flagship programme of the Government of India with which aims to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.

MP WANI is a schme to expand broadband Internet access across the country. The government has approved the establishment of a public Wi-Fi network through the Public Data Offices (PDOs).

The various initiatives to be undertaken for the acceleration of broadband internet services are as follows:

1) Public Data Office (PDO) will be given to individuals living in residential area to owners of a Kirana shop

2) The small shopkeepers to serve as a Public Data Office (PDO) and provide WiFi service which will boost their income

3) The individuals in residential areas can serve as a Public Data Office (PDO) and provide WiFi service

4) This will create many employment opportunities for the people across the country

5) This scheme will help in the field of education by enabling easy access to books and study materials online

The Union cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in December 2020 approved the proposal of proliferating broadband through public WiFi network to create digital communication infrastructure.

The government also approved that the last-mile Public Wi-Fi providers require no license and registration to facilitate ease of doing business and encourage local shops and small establishments to become Wi-Fi providers.

They have also been exempted from paying any fees to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). PDOAs, who will aggregate the last-mile providers will also not be required to take  any license.

PM-WANI framework is also expected to encourage App Providers who will offer services for registering and authenticating users.
