Google has integrated two new artificial intelligence (AI) features into its Pixel smartphones. These features, namely Scam Detection in Phone and Google Play Protect, aim to protect devices from malicious apps or spam calls. The first feature, Scam Detection in Phone, monitors conversations in real-time to determine if an incoming call is spam. The second feature, Google Play Protect, monitors the background activity of an app and issues real-time warnings, alerting users.

In a blog post, Google confirmed that these features with real-time alerts are available on Google Pixel 6 and newer Google Pixel devices. Initially, the Scam Detection in Phone feature will be available in the US for users who have signed up for the Google beta programme. A wider rollout of the feature is likely in the coming months.

Notably, the Scam Detection feature will be compatible with only English-language phone calls. Unlike typical ID apps and services, which rely on phone numbers and track the calling behaviour to label a number as a scam, the Scam Detection feature will use on-device AI to monitor for common scam indicators while making phone calls. Once the system detects any signs of fraud, it flags the call and suggests the user to hang up.

Meanwhile, Google Play Protect assesses behavioural signals regarding the use of sensitive permissions and the way interactions have been undertaken with other apps and services. Leveraging the AI-powered Live Threat Detection feature, this AI feature will monitor all apps installed on eligible Android smartphones. If it detects any suspicious background activity or irrelevant interactions with other apps, it issues a warning and alerts users to remove the flagged apps.

In related developments, Google Pixel is likely to unveil a new feature, called ‘AI Replies’, which will allow Pixel devices to answer calls on behalf of users. This feature will employ advanced language models to facilitate seamless responses.
