The Facebook Developer Conference kicked off in San Jose on Tuesday night with more than 5,000 developers, creators and entrepreneurs from around the world coming together for F8. The two-day event started with a keynote by Mark Zuckerberg on how Facebook is building a more privacy-focused social platform, giving people spaces where they can express themselves freely and feel connected to the people and communities that matter most. He then turned it over to leaders from Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and AR/VR to share more announcements.

Unlike the previous few years, Facebook didn't make any major announcement for any of its platforms. But, a report by WABetaInfo claims that WhatsApp is working on a feature to bring calling to the desktop version of the app. The WhatsApp tracker also shared the screenshots of the feature and said that it is still in the development stage. 

"In these months, WhatsApp was working on a lot of improvements for their web client, but their first priority was to implement the possibility to make calls from WhatsApp Web/Desktop. The option to make calls will be available in the main menu in the chat," it reported. 

When available, the option could be activated by clicking the settings menu icon found in the top-right of any chats screen. The users will simply have to open the chat of the contact they want to call, click the icon in the top-right, and then hit voice call. The feature is still a long way off from public roll out but there is a chance that it might discussed during the conference. 

Business Catalog on WhatsApp

During the first day of the conference, WhatsApp announced that people will soon be able to see the business catalog within the app while chatting with a business. "People and businesses are finding WhatsApp a great way to connect. In the months ahead people will be able to see a business catalog right within WhatsApp when chatting with a business. With catalogs, businesses can showcase their goods so people can easily discover them," it said.

New design for Facebook

A new design for Facebook - FB5 was rolled out which the company claims is simpler, faster, more immersive and puts your communities at the center. It said that this design will help users find what they are looking for and get to your most-used features. "People will start seeing some of these updates in the Facebook app right away, and the new desktop site will come in the next few months," the company said.
