Chipmaker MediaTek has introduced a new processor – G85 – which is likely to power mid-range smartphones in the coming days. The new chipset will be aimed at gaming smartphones, just like the G90 and G90T processors. Some of the devices that run on the G90 series chip are Redmi Note 8 Pro, Realme 6, among others.

The Helio G85 chip boasts of a 1GHz GPU along with 2X Arm Cortex- A75 CPUs, which can achieve a processing speed up to 2GHz. MediaTek has also made the multi-threaded performance faster with the 6X Cortex- A55 CPUs which can operate at frequencies of 1.8 GHz. 

These improvements in performance will be assisted by a larger battery which will have achieve optimum resource management on mobile devices in order to provide the gamer with an enhanced experience.

The Helio G85 gives device makers the opportunity to create a wide range of multi-camera smartphones for more consumer choice. Device makers can design smartphones with any mix of wide angle, telescopic, macro and sensor sizes up to 48MP. Additionally, the HelioG85 includes a multitude of hardware accelerators, including a hardware depth engine for dual-camera bokeh captures and more. The chipset can also perform ultra-fast recording up to 240fps.

The chipset boosts the performance of AI camera tasks such as object recognition (Google Lens), smart photo albums, scene detection and segmentation with background removal, as well as bokehshot enhancements. It also has built-in VoW capabilities that minimize the power of applications in the Android OS such as the always-on Google Assistant.
