Recently, Digital India has tweeted a thread of tweets from its official Twitter account to emphasis on this flagship initiative by the central government. Digital India tweeted, "#6YearsOfDigitalIndia | @DigiLocker is a flagship initiative of the @GoI_MeitY, which aims at #DigitalEmpowerment’ of citizens by providing access to authentic digital documents to citizen’s digital document wallet." One must remember that as many as 530 documents can be issued, requested, shared and saved on DigiLocker.
In another tweet, Digital India has also cited the rise in number of registrations for DigiLocker. The tweet said, "@DigiLocker has emerged as one of the key elements of e-Governance by contributing towards the major steps taken by the Government of India to move towards the vision of 'Minimum Government, Maximum Governance'. The whooping numbers of registered users justify the same. (SIC)"
The benefits of DigiLocker for the citizens are as follows:
1) Important Documents are accessible by means of DigiLocker anytime and anywhere
2) These are authentic documents that are legally at par with the originals.
3) Digital Document Exchange with the consent of the citizen.
4) Faster service Delivery for government benefits, employment, financial inclusion, education, health.
One must also note that signing up for DigiLocker is also very simple. In order to sign up for DigiLocker, all one need is a mobile or the Aadhaar number. The mobile/Aadhaar number will be authenticated by sending an OTP (one-time password) followed by setting a security PIN for two-Factor authentication. This will create one's DigiLocker account.
