As pollution hits an alarming level, people are queuing up to buy air purifiers to protect themselves from the toxic air.
According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi was found 'severe' at 6:15 am today, with the AQI standing at 436. An AQI between 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor and 401-500 are marked as severe/hazardous.

Air purifier
Air purifier reduces air contamination inside the house along with indoor pollution. Hence, air filters with good High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) efficiency are more effective in combating indoor pollution.
HEPA filter
A HEPA filter is a type of mechanical air filter; it works by forcing air through a fine mesh that traps harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites and tobacco smoke. A HEPA filter sucks airborne contaminants and pushes out clean, fresh air.
If you are planning to buy air purifiers, here are some points you need to keep in mind:
- Sam Taylor, Dyson Engineer and a few air purifiers from Dyson Air purifiers, told Zee Business: "In real life, the only way to truly know how well an air purifier is working is to monitor the air quality. Some air purifiers offer sensing capabilities and are smart enough to respond by purifying the air automatically when pollutants are detected.
- "To be able to sense, a purifier needs on-board air quality sensors. It should also have software and electronics that will allow it to process that information and react intelligently to purify the air," Taylor further added.
- According to Taylor, machines have fully-sealed filters – that don’t allow the airflow to bypass the filter media, so you can be sure the machine is properly filtering the air of particles and gases. Dual filters – HEPA or other types of particle filter remove particle pollutants from the air, like dust, pollen and pet dander. If you can, also look for a machine with an activated carbon filter that will absorb VOCs, NO2 and other gases".
Air Purifiers to look out for
Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 3: Priced at Rs 9,999, the Mi Air Purifier 3 comes with true HEPA Filter with filtration efficiency of 99.97 per cent for particle size up to 0.3 microns. Its OLED touch Display shows real time PM2.5 concentration, Temperature and humidity, Wi-Fi connection and Working mode.
Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HPO7 air purifier: Priced at Rs 47,515, Dyson air purifiers combine intelligent sensing with an advanced HEPA H13 filtration system that captures gases and 99.95 percent of particles as small as 0.1 microns. And only Dyson air purifiers have powerful Air Multiplier technology to purify the whole room.
Molekule Air Mini air purifier: Molekule’s initial offering to the Indian market Air Mini is designed for rooms up to 23 sq meters – ideal for apartments, bedrooms, and home offices. The device is whisper-quiet, ozone-free, sleek, and compact in design, and fits comfortably in most places, which makes it easy to place next to potential sources of airborne pollutants.
It uses a hybrid of Molekule’s Pre-Filter and PECO-Filter in a single filter. Molekule products rely on patented PECO technology, which goes beyond filtration to destroy microscopic pollutants like mold, viruses, bacteria, ozone, and VOCs at the molecular level. Price: 25,999.
