In what comes as a concerning development for Android users, Qualcomm has confirmed that a cyberattack recently exploited a zero-day vulnerability in its chipsets. Discovered by security experts from Amnesty International’s Security Lab and Google’s Threat Analysis Group, the flaw impacts a wide range of chipsets used in various smartphones. Rather than launching a widespread attack, the attackers appear to have targeted specific individuals, raising questions regarding the identities of the individuals targeted and the motivations behind the attack.
In its security bulletin, Qualcomm revealed that at least 64 chipsets were impacted by the latest vulnerability. The affected chipsets include high-end processors like Snapdragon 888+ and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The vulnerability’s impact also extends to mid-range chipsets, including the Snapdragon 660 and 680, as well as various connectivity modules, encompassing the FastConnect 6700, 6800, 6900, and 7800, along with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem.
Notably, these chipsets are commonly integrated into devices manufactured by brands like OnePlus, Samsung, and Motorola. Furthermore, the iPhone 12 series also comes equipped with Snapdragon X55 modem. However, it has yet to be determined whether iPhone users were among those targeted.
To address the vulnerability, Qualcomm has shared a patch with different manufacturers, strongly suggesting them to implement the update at the earliest. Devices impacted by the attack may soon receive a software update. Users are advised to remain vigilant and update their devices with the latest software updates as soon as they become available.
In other related developments, MediaTek has launched its latest chipset, the Dimensity 9400. This chipset is claimed to be optimized for edge-AI applications, immersive gaming, incredible photography, and more.
