Ban on Chinese apps: In an unprecedented move, the government of India on Monday banned 59 Chinese apps, citing concerns that these applications are ‘prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order’.
Ban on Chinese apps: In an unprecedented move, the government of India on Monday banned 59 Chinese apps, citing concerns that these applications are ‘prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order’. Most of these applications have already been removed from Google Play Store’s listing page. The applications banned by the government include TikTok, Club Factory, SHAREit, Likee, Mi Video Call (Xiaomi), Weibo, Baidu and Bigo Live.
“The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, Ministry of Home Affairs has also sent an exhaustive recommendation for blocking of these malicious apps... the government of India has decided to disallow the usage of (these) apps,” the release by the IT Ministry read.
Some of these apps had millions of downloads on Google Play Store but the ban should not impact users, with several capable alternatives available in the market. Here is a look at them:
