Apple unveiled the tvOS 17 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023. The software update brings with it a bunch of features that will provide a more personalised experience to Apple TV users. The new features include FaceTime, an all-new Control Center, and Dolby Vision 8.1 support among others.

Below are the key features of tvOS 17.

FaceTime

This is the main highlight of the new Apple TV software update. The FaceTime app on Apple TV allows users to make calls directly from the TV and view the video on a big screen. Users can also initiate calls from their iPhone or iPad and transfer the call to Apple TV. The FaceTime app on the TV makes use of Continuity Camera support to wirelessly connect to the iPhone or iPad. The TV then uses the device’s camera and microphone and displays the participants on the TV screen. The app also allows users to view movies or shows during a FaceTime call with the help of the Split View feature.

Users can also transfer the FaceTime call back to their iPhone or iPad using controls on the device. If during a FaceTime call on Apple TV, the user receives another call, then a notification will appear on the TV screen without revealing the caller’s name.

Video conferencing

Apple has said that video conferencing applications like Webex and Zoom will be launched on tvOS later this year. This will enable users to attend video conferences using Apple TV 4K. Developers will be able to utilise the Continuity Camera APIs on the Apple TV and integrate their iPhone and iPad camera and microphone into the tvOS app to make more immersive entertainment experiences.

New Control Center

A new Control Center has been introduced with the tvOS 17 which makes it easy to access ley settings and information on the Apple TV. The Control Center displays time, active profile, and other details based on the user’s activities.

If you ever misplace your Siri Remote, then the tvOS 17 would help you find it. In such a case, a user can open the Apple TV remote inside the Control Center on their iPhone and locate the lost remote.

tvOS 17 comes with other additional features that include Enhance Dialogue, Dolby Vision 8.1 support, Apple Fitness+ enhancements, and third-party VPN support.
