Apple Intelligence: Since AI has taken over the discourse in tech circles, the smartphone market is not immune to its influence. In this regard, Apple unveiled the first look of its iOS 18 and its AI features, dubbed Apple Intelligence, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June this year. The features include a slew of functionalities, such as a Siri-backed ChatGPT, automatic call recording and transcribing, on-device image generation, and more.

Generally, the updates that Apple brings are not merely confined to the latest device; they are often extended to even relatively older devices, unlike what typically happens in the Android ecosystem. However, the situation may be different this time. Although the iOS 18 update can be availed by over 20 iPhone models, the top feature of the update- Apple Intelligence- will be reserved only for the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Even the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus, which are also part of the 15 series launches, will miss out on Apple Intelligence.

Why do other Apple devices miss out?

Reports suggest that hardware compatibility and computational limitations play a role in extending Apple Intelligence, which other devices- except for the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max-don’t meet. Devices need to have at least 8 GB of RAManda strong Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to support the Apple Intelligence feature. Notably, Apple Intelligence has also been extended to all iPads and Macs, powered by the Apple Silicon M1 or the newer chip, including the MacBook Air and Mac mini.

What about the Apple 16 series and AI compatibility?

As Apple is slated to bring its 16 series smartphones, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, all these devices will share operational compatibility with the AI features. The new series devices will be equipped with the A18 chip and at least 8 GB RAM.
