Samsung Galaxy S22, is the successor of Galaxy S21, which was launched last year. Samsung Galaxy S22 price in India starts at Rs. 72,999 for the base 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant and it also comes in an 8GB + 256GB model that costs Rs 76,999. It comes in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green, Pink and Gold color options. We used Phantom White variant for more than 10 days and here's what I have to say about this cheapest smartphone in Samsung’s Galaxy S22 lineup.
One of the major highlights is, Samsung has brought the latest Snapdragon processors to the S22 series in India, instead of regular Exynos chipset. The Samsung Galaxy S22 is also powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. Samsung Galaxy S22, the successor of Galaxy S21, now has a glass back instead of plastic. You can say the size of Galaxy S22 has a decent size and you can say it's a compact phone. This smartphone is extremely lightweight as well and it has a bezel-less screen. To create a sleeker and more refined look, Samsung built this phone with a distinctive flat display, complete with a luxurious glass and haze finish.
The Galaxy S22 is also coming with new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. The S22 is equipped with this tough glass on the front and back, so you can worry less about accidental drops. The Galaxy S22's flat front and back panels also gives you premium feeling and you can definitely go for it. The smartphone feels amazing in your hands and the build quality is pretty solid this time. The good thing about this smartphone from Samsung is the back pane, which rarely attracts fingerprints. You can easily hold the device for long hours. Overall, the looks of this Samsung Galaxy S22 5G are really premium and appealing. It will definitely attract the attention of buyers, especially those who look for elite and premium design.
On the rear side of the Samsung Galaxy S22, you can easily see a triple-camera setup with the LED flash and Samsung branding at the bottom. On the right edge of the device, the Samsung Galaxy S22 houses the power button and a dedicated space for the volume keys. At the bottom, the device features a Type-C USB charging port, Nano-SIM Card Slot, and stereo speakers. The smartphone does not offer 3.5mm audio jack. The speakers performed extremely well during the review period. Connectivity options on the Samsung Galaxy S22 include Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6 support, 5G, 4G, USB type-C, NFC, Location(GPS, Galileo, Glonass, BeiDou). Sensors on the phone include an Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor, Accelerometer, Barometer, Gyro sensor, Geomagnetic sensor, Hall sensor, Proximity sensor and Ambient Light sensor. Also, the IP68 rating makes the Samsung Galaxy S22 dust and water-resistant.
In terms of display performance, the Samsung Galaxy S22 has a 6.1-inch full-HD+ Super Dynamic AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. You will also see the punch-hole camera in the centre top of the display with an in-display fingerprint sensor and face recognition which worked pretty smoothly and lag-free during the review period. The display of Galaxy S22 has a razor-thin bezels and holes at the top for the selfie cameras. Honestly, the display offers good colors and sharpness in various light conditions. Even in direct sunlight, the display worked extremely well. The fingerprint sensor works well too and the high refresh rate makes this phone really premium. The overall experience while using the screen was smooth and lag-free. Our multimedia experience was great, the colors came out good on the screen while playing games and watching movies.
Let's talk about camera performance now. Samsung Galaxy S22 has a triple-camera setup on the back of the phone with 50MP Main Camera ,12MP Ultra Wide Camera and 10MP Telephoto Camera with 3x Optical Zoom and Super Resolution Zoom up to 30x. The rear camera takes bright and stunning pictures with no compromise to picture quality. When you’re capturing videos, the new Auto Framing feature detects and tracks up to 10 people and automatically adjusts the camera’s focus, so your camera captures everyone clearly. It is also powered by advanced VDIS technology which minimizes vibrations, so you get smooth, sharp footage even when you’re on the move. For video calls and selfies, the smartphone is backed by 10MP camera.
While reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S22, we used most of the modes to check the camera performance and we found that Portrait Mode, Pro Mode, Single Take Mode and Night produced very sharp and detailed pictures in various light conditions. The photos we captured were colorful and beautiful. While taking multiple shots with different modes, the Galaxy S22 did a decent job here. The videos also came out good on this mobile phone. Thanks to Director's View feature, it will take your video experience and to next new levels. If we compare the images captured with Samsung Galaxy S22 in low light conditions in normal settings with iPhone 13, this Samsung phone is giving some really tough fight to iPhone 13. In terms of front camera performance, the smartphone captures good shots in daylight conditions but lacked sharpness in low lights. Also, I faced heating issues while taking multiple shots for long durations.
As I mentioned earlier, Samsung has brought premium Snapdragon chipset in the Galaxy S22 series in India. The smartphone is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor paired with 8GB of RAM in India. Thanks to this processor, the smartphone ensures high speed and unstoppable performance. On the software side, the Galaxy S22 runs One UI 4.1 is based on Android 12. The new version has small tweaks throughout the interface and menus which look good. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor chipset makes the gaming experience smooth and lag-free on this smartphone. The good thing is the UI is very easy to use and users might not face any issues. While playing heavy games and other light gamers, we saw lag-free gaming here. The graphic quality was excellent in basic settings.
Overall, the Galaxy S22 was fast, smooth, switching between the apps, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and more, was easy and the performance was flawless. The Galaxy S22 also makes it easy to make your phone your own. You can use Samsung’s clean and intuitive new One UI user interface to customize the look and feel of your home screen and widget. Tailor your icon colors, widgets, color palette, and more to your personal preferences, and create a mobile experience that reflects who you are. One UI also gives you easy access to a wealth of emojis, GIFs, and stickers directly on your keyboard. In terms of battery performance, the Samsung Galaxy S22 is backed by a 3,700mAh battery with 25W fast charging. Once fully charged, the Samsung Galaxy S22 lasted for almost a day during normal to medium usage. Also, the device did not take time to reach 100 per cent. However, the device did heat up during video streaming for long hours. Overall, the battery size, didn't disappoint us.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Verdict: Available at the starting price of 72,999 , the Samsung Galaxy S22 comes with a flagship tag and premium features and competing with Apple iPhone 13. The device offers a great Android experience, excellent camera performance, and premium design. For those who are looking for iPhone 13 alternative, this Samsung phone might meet your demands.
