A sustainable pen for a greener future
Founded by Saurabh Mehta and his wife Shivani Mehta, residents of Delhi, Note began its journey in 2018-19 with a vision to tackle the environmental impact of traditional pens. Recognising that conventional pens consist predominantly of plastic, with only 5% serving a functional purpose, the couple embarked on a mission to create a 100% biodegradable pen.
Seeking alternatives
Saurabh Mehta's realisation that a mere 5% of a pen is utilitarian sparked a quest for sustainable alternatives. While early prototypes featured paper bodies, the challenge remained in eliminating plastic from the refill mechanism. After four years of dedicated research, a breakthrough emerged: refill cartridges crafted from paper, treated with a proprietary technique using vegetable oil as a barrier to prevent ink leakage.
Beyond paper pens
Note's commitment to sustainability extends beyond paper pens. Throughout their research journey, they introduced pens and pencils made from bamboo and marble, broadening their eco-friendly product range.
Making sustainable choices feasible
Currently priced between Rs 25 to Rs 500, Note's pens aim to offer affordability without compromising sustainability. Saurabh Mehta envisions further price reductions in the future, paralleling the gradual decline in plastic pen prices over time.
Government grants and future endeavors
Supported by a grant of approximately Rs 16 lakh under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, Note utilised these funds for product development. While currently self-funded, the company anticipates the need for additional funding to fuel ongoing research and development efforts.
In conclusion, Note exemplifies how innovative thinking and dedication can pave the way for sustainable solutions in unexpected domains, promising a greener future for generations to come.
