Various Banks' Minimum Balance Requirement Rules Compared - SBI vs PNB vs HDFC vs ICICI Bank

Bank Minimum Balance Rules: Customers need to maintain an average minimum monthly balance to keep their savings bank account active. The minimum balance a customer needs to maintain differs from one bank to another. In case, the customer fails to maintain the minimum balance, they are charged penalties by their respective banks. The penalties charged by banks differ depending on various factors, including the location of the account. Top lenders of the country including the State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank have fixed their average minimum monthly balance limit as per the location of the customers' account in urban, metro, semi-urban and rural areas. 

Here's a look at the minimum balance requirements in SBI, PNB, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank:

State Bank of India Minimum Balance Requirement

According to the official SBI website, customers having a regular savings bank account with SBI need to maintain a monthly average balance of Rs 3000 in metros and urban areas. In semi-urban and rural areas, the minimum balance required are Rs 2000 and Rs 1000 respectively. 

Punjab National Bank Minimum Balance Requirement

According to the official PNB website, customers having a regular savings bank account with Punjab National Bank need to maintain a monthly average balance of Rs2000 in metropolitan, urban areas and semi-urban areas. In rural areas, the minimum balance required is Rs 1000.

ICICI Bank Minimum Balance Requirement

According to the official ICICI Bank website, customers having a regular savings bank account with ICICI need to maintain a monthly average balance of Rs 10,000 in metros and urban areas. In semi-urban areas, the minimum balance required is Rs 5000 and Rs 2000 in rural areas. The minimum balance required is Rs 1000 in "Gramin" areas.

HDFC Bank Minimum Balance Requirement

According to the official HDFC Bank website, customers having a regular savings bank account with HDFC Bank need to maintain a monthly average balance of Rs 10,000 in metros and urban areas. In semi-urban and rural areas, the minimum balance required are Rs 5000 and Rs 2500 respectively.
