Linked PAN card with wrong Aadhaar? Here’s how to delink, documents needed, fee and more
Many taxpayers while linking their PAN with Aadhaar faced a common problem that the PAN was linked to the wrong Aadhaar number. Even many complained that their Aadhaar was linked to the wrong PAN and raised the issue with the Income Tax Department on Twitter.
The deadline to link the Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar number has already ended on June 30, 2023. Those who failed to link their PAN with Aadhaar within the deadline may face difficulties in availing several financial services, including bank transactions. The PAN not linked to Aadhaar will become inactive and this will also lead to problems in filing Income Tax Return.
However, many taxpayers while linking their PAN with Aadhaar faced a common problem that the PAN was linked to the wrong Aadhaar number. Even many complained that their Aadhaar was linked to the wrong PAN and raised the issue with the Income Tax Department on Twitter.
How to delink Aadhaar from the wrong PAN ?
The taxpayers facing the problem should first delink their PAN and Aadhaar, and then follow the steps to link the PAN with the correct Aadhaar number. This can be done by logging in to the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department.
This can also be done offline by submitting a request to the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (JAO), according to the I-T Department. The contact details of the JAO can be obtained by logging in to the e-filing portal.
The process of delinking Aadhaar and PAN is simple and it can be done online.
Step 1: Request an Audit Log from the Income Tax Business Application through the Regional Computer Centre. Identify the reason for the issue.
Step 3: Submit an application to the JAO along with the required documents to delink PAN and Aadhaar.
Documents required for delinking PAN-Aadhaar
- Original and a copy of Aadhaar.
- Original and a copy of PAN card.
- A complaint letter
According to the guidelines of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, it was made mandatory for all PAN holders to link with Aadhar by the last date. Failure to link the documents has resulted in the
iPAN becoming inoperative effective from July 1, 2023.
Earlier, the due date was March 31, 2023, but it was extended by the Government to June 30, 2023. After the due date passed, the government then decided to impose a penalty of Rs 1,000 to link the two documents.
In case of incorrect linking of PAN and Aadhaar, one first needs to delink and then follow the procedure to link the two documents. However, it will attract the requisite fee.
How to PAN and Aadhaar after the due date?
Step 1: Log in to the income tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ in the Profile section.
Step 3: Enter the correct PAN and Aadhaar number.
Step 4: ‘Continue’ to pay through e-Pay Tax.
Step 5: Enter your PAN and registered mobile number to receive an OTP.
Step 6: After verification of number, page will be redirected to the e-Pay Tax page.
Step 7: Select AY 2024–25, type the payment as ‘Other Receipts, and click ‘Continue’.
Step 8: After the payment of the fee, you can link your PAN with Aadhaar.
