The Income Tax department has opened the facility for taxpayers to file their ITR forms for the assessment year 2019-20. Currently, there are seven forms that need to be filled as a part of Income Tax Return (ITR) every year at a specified deadline. These forms are ITR 1, ITR 2, ITR 3, ITR 4, ITR 5, ITR 6 and ITR 7. However, currently not all forms are available for filing, the department has opened the process for only ITR 1 and ITR 4 form. Talking about ITR 1 form, it is the most common for taxpayers who are salaried employees or individuals. The ITR 1 form which is also referred to as ITR-1 Sahaj, must be filed by individuals whose incomes are arising from salary, pension, one house property and other sources.

Here's how you can file ITR-1 Sahaj!

Step 1 - Login to e-Filing website with User ID, Password, Date of Birth /Date of Incorporation and Captcha.

Step 2 - Go to e-File and click on "Prepare and Submit ITR Online".

Step 3 - Select the Income Tax Return Form ITR 1/ITR 4S and the Assessment Year.

Step 4 - Fill in the details and click the "Submit" button.

Step 5 - Upload Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), if applicable. One needs to ensure the DSC is registered with e-Filing.

Step 6 - Click on "Submit" button.

Step 7 - On successful submission, ITR-V would be displayed (if DSC is not used). Click on the link and download the ITR-V. ITR-V will also be sent to the registered email. If ITR is uploaded with DSC, the Return Filing process is complete.

Interestingly, there are certain set of taxpayers who actually are not needed to file ITR-1 form Sahaj. According to Income Tax department, these individuals do not need to file ITR-1:

1. Non-resident or not oridinary resident.

2. Taxpayers whose total income for the Assessment year 2018-19 exceeds Rs. 50 lakh.

3. Taxpayers whose total income for the year includes income from more than one house property.

4. Total income for the year includes income from winnings from lottery or income from race horses or income taxable under section 115BBDA.

5. Total income for the year includes income chargeable to tax under the head "Capital Gains".

6.Income of the nature referred to in section 115BBE.

7. Total income for the year includes agricultural income of more than Rs. 5,000.

8. Total income for the year includes income from business or profession.

9. Any taxpayer whose total income for the year includes loss under the head "Income from other sources".

10. Individuals who have claimed relief under section 90 and/or 91.

11.Any Resident having any assets (including financial interest in any entity) located outside India or signing authority in any account located outside India.

13. Any resident having income from any source outside India.

14. If income to be apportioned in accordance with provisions of section 5A. 

From the above, it does not mean that these taxpayers do not have to file ITR at all. What it means is that, you can skip the burden of ITR-1 Sahaj form filing. But, the department has other forms available as well which does cover the mentioned criteria, hence, you should file your ITR carefully.
