When we talk about a PAN card, we most likely think of it as a document needed to file income tax or as proof necessary to complete know your customer (KYC) formalities. We associate a PAN card with an adult. Hardly do we think that a child needs a PAN card.
However, contrary to popular belief, a PAN card is not exclusive to adults. Minors below 18 years of age can also obtain a PAN card. However, the application must be made by their parents or guardians.
When do children need a PAN card?
1. Investment Purposes: If you are investing in your child’s name
2. Nominee for Investments: To make your child a nominee for your investments.
3. Bank Accounts: When opening a bank account in your child’s name.
4. Income Earning: If the minor has a source of income.
How to apply for a PAN card for children
Online application
1. Visit the NSDL website and download Form 49A
2. Fill out Form 49A, carefully read the instructions, and fill in all personal information by selecting the correct category.
3. Upload the child’s age certificate, necessary documents, and a photograph of the parents.
4. Upload the parents’ signature and pay the fee of Rs 107.
5. Submit the form and receive a receipt number to track the application status.
6. After verification, you will receive the PAN card within 15 days.
Offline application
1. Obtain Form 49A from the official website or the NSDL office.
2. Complete the form. Attach two photographs of the child and the required documents.
3. Submit the completed form and documents to the nearest NSDL office along with the fee.
4. After verification, the PAN card will be sent to the provided address.
Required documents
1. Parents' Address and Identity Proof: Proof of the minor's parent’s address and identity.
2. Applicant’s Proof of Identity: Any one of the following documents for the Guardian:
- Aadhaar card
- Ration card
- Passport
- Driving license
- Voter ID card
3. Proof of Address: A copy of any one of the following:
- Aadhaar card
- Post office passbook
- Property registration documents
- Domicile certificate
