After demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes in 2016, the introduction of bright pink Rs 2000 banknote and then coming of new currencies of Rs 200 and Rs 50 has made our wallet contents more colourful. Along with it, the menace of fake currency notes has also been in the news. Earlier, reports only about counterfeit currencies of higher denominations came to fore, but small denomination notes are also not left behind. Therefore, people should know if the new Rs 50 note they are carrying in their pocket is authentic or not. Some news have circulated about fake Rs 50 currency notes. A really big problem arises when fake currency is caught in your hands and then you are asked for an explanation. 
 
Notably, the RBI in August 2017 announced the introduction of the new fluorescent blue Rs 50 currency notes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series, bearing Patel's signature. A motif of Hampi with Chariot along with the Swachh Bharat logo and slogan replaced the image of India's Parliament with a hoisted flag printed on the reverse side of the old Rs 50 note.
 
The apex bank's circular had last year stated, "The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue Rs 50 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, bearing signature of Dr. Urjit R. Patel, Governor, Reserve Bank of India. The new denomination has motif of Hampi with Chariot on the reverse, depicting the country’s cultural heritage. The base colour of the note is Fluorescent Blue. The note has other designs, geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme, both at the obverse and reverse."
 
Further, the RBI statement said, "All the banknotes in the denomination of ₹ 50/- issued by the Reserve Bank in the earlier series will continue to be legal tender," adding "The image and salient features of ₹ 50 denomination banknote in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series are as under":

The RBI had also clarified that dimension of the banknote will be 66 mm x 135 mm.
