Giving relief to its customers, Axis Bank has waived off all charges for savings account, current account and prepaid card customers (wherever applicable) towards online IMPS and financial and non-financial ATM transactions between March 23 and March 31 (both dates inclusive). The private lender has 2.6 crore customers on board and the move is expected to benefit them all. The decision comes in the wake of coronavirus outbreak in India and the increasing number of cases across the country.

The bank said that it has set aside Rs 100 crore to support customers, employees, vendors, government agencies and the community at large towards curbing the spread of coronavirus.

"Axis Bank stands one with the nation in its battle to ward off the biggest threat in recent times. At this point, it's critical to join hands, support people and communities to stand together in our fight against the pandemic. I would like to reiterate our Prime Minister's message of social distancing, displaying resolve and restraint," Amitabh Chaudhry, MD and CEO, Axis Bank, said.

The services of several other banks will be hit in the coming days due to coronavirus outbreak. HDFC and ICICI have asked customers to use digital means for transactions and said they have reduced their staff in office as a precautionary measure against the spread of coronavirus. HDFC Bank has changed its working hours and will function from 10 am to 2 pm till March 31, except on Saturday.

"In the interest of public health and safety, we will be withdrawing the following services temporarily of passbook updates and foreign currency purchase," it said in a communication sent to its customers on Sunday.

ICICI Bank informed its customers through SMS that "our branches shall remain open with required hygiene steps and reduced staff".
