7th Pay Commission: While government employees in many states are still waiting to get an increased salary as per the recommendations of the 7th CPC, as many as 20 lakh government employees of Maharashtra has received a new year gift in advance. The Maharashtra government has decided to implement the Seventh Pay Commission from January 1, 2019 for its employees. This will put an additional burden of Rs 40,000 crore on the state treasury.

The state government had earlier constituted a committee headed by retired bureaucrat K P Bakshi to look into the demands of the employees. However, now under pressure from the protesting employees, the state government has decided not to wait for the committee's report.

Minister of State for Finance Deepak Kesarkar made the announcement after Maharashtra state government and semi-government employees and teachers had gone on a strike over the issue on August 9. 

Since the 7th CPC pay will come into effect retrospectively from the year 2016, the employees will also be getting arrears for 36 months. The minister said that arrears of Rs 10,000 crore would be paid retrospectively from 2016 over a five-week period, while the dearness allowance would be paid retrospectively for the last 14 months.

November has not only brought this good news for the people of Maharashtra. The state government has also approved 16 per cent reservation to Marathas in government jobs and education in the state. The bill has already been approved by the Governor Vidyasagar Rao. Now, the state will undergo Assembly polls in 2019 and the move may help the current regime to retain power next years.
