Rs 1 lakh becomes Rs 2 lakh: These two PSU funds have more than doubled investors’ money in 1 year; what next?
Mutual funds are a popular investment option for both new and experienced investors due to their potential for good long-term returns.
A rally on Dalal Street has rewarded investors handsomely in select spaces, such as PSUs, a trend that can be witnessed in the mutual fund returns over the past one year. Data from mutual fund raising industry body AMFI shows that two open-ended PSU equity mutual fund schemes have more than doubled investors’ money in one year in direct mode, as of April 11, 2024.

What next?
Several money managers expect the prevalent trend in PSUs to continue on Dalal Street.
"Looking at monthly flows and that too especially quarter ends and year ends may not be ideal way to understand the trends in flows or investor preferences . We all know that shorter end fixed income funds are bound to see disproportionate outflows due to balance sheet build up by institutional investors,” Madhu Nair, CEO of Union Mutual Fund, told Zeebiz.com.
Inflows into equity mutual fund schemes decreased 15.8 per cent sequentially to Rs 22,633.2 crore in March, retreating from a nearly two-year high clocked the previous month, according to AMFI.
“Multi asset funds are gaining popularity and attracting flows which is a good sign as asset allocation is taking center stage . This could lead to happy outcomes for investors over long term,” Nair added.
Rajesh Bhatia, CIO of ITI Mutual Fund, said the public sector undertaking (PSU) stocks have seen a surge as the fundamentals and return on equity have started to improve due to the improvement in the management of these companies, resulting in a rally in stock prices.
"The Nifty PSE index has given high returns over the past one year, and these have resulted in attracting investors towards PSUs," Bhatia added.
Bhatia advised that an investor may invest in the PSU funds. "As we are at the start of a favourable economic cycle and environment, heightened capital expenditure, the government's unwavering focus on indigenisation and exports, and a transformative boost in the country's infrastructure have further added fillip to the sector. It would, however, be wise to be a prudent stock picker in the PSU stocks," the fund manager said.
“Key risks to the market continue to be geopolitical risks. Additionally, commodity prices, which can add to inflation, should be watched. For PSU bank stocks in particular, a reversal of the benign asset quality cycle can be a key risk. Please consult your financial advisor before making any financial decisions,” Bhatia suggested.
Any specific sectors to watch out for?
According to ITI MF's Bhatia, apart from the PSU sector, there is a possibility of growth in the capital goods and telecommunication sectors.
"Of course, again, one has to do stock picking in these sectors. Given that valuations are elevated for the markets and for these sectors, we are gravitating to companies where we find strong business models and lower risks of execution, moving forward," Bhatia stated.
