Any passenger booking a ticket through IRCTC website or app can take the advantage of this insurance facility. However, only Indian citizens can avail this facility, and foreign citizens do not come under its purview.
Many flight ticket booking websites also offer this type of insurance, but in comparison, their premiums are much higher.
Benefits of train travel insurance:
On opting for this insurance, passengers get compensated for any loss of valuables and luggage during their train journey. Apart from this, in case of an accident, the expenses of treatment, and, in case of death, compensation is provided to the insured's nominee.
Under the railway travel insurance facility, if a passenger dies in a train accident or is permanently disabled, then an insurance amount of up to Rs 10 lakh is paid out.
If the passenger becomes partially disabled, then he/she is given Rs 7.5 lakh as compensation. On the other hand, in case of serious injury, assistance of Rs 2 lakh is paid, and in case of minor injury, passengers get paid up to Rs 10,000.
How to claim train travel insurance?
Travelers can claim insurance within 4 months of being in a train accident. For this facility provided by IRCTC, passengers can file a claim for insurance by going to the office of the insurance company.
Notably, while buying insurance, travelers must fill in the name of the nominee, so that there is no problem in claim it in case of any untoward incident.
