Although the government has categorically stated that the ITR filing last date will not be extended, taxpayers have been requesting an extension of the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing due date.

The ITR filing last date or due date is 31 July.

Taxpayers have been complaining about the portal-related issue and requesting the department to extend the deadline.

A user named CA Nitin Nayak on Twitter wrote: "Reasons for #Extend_Due_Date_Immediately 1. 26AS and AIS mismatch;2. Portal not fully functional.;3. 26AS not updated till 15th June.;4. Forms for filing not available on time.;5. TDS and GST return filing dates clash."

Taxpayers filing heir ITR beyond the last will have to pay late fees. The late ITR filing fine is Rs 1,000 if the total income of an assessed person does not exceed Rs 5 lakh and Rs. 5,000 if the income exceeds Rs 5 lakh.

Meanwhile, according to data provided by community social media platform LocalCircles, 41 per cent of Indians who qualify to file the return are yet to file their papers. Around 10 per cent said that they were facing technical glitches.
