Made a mistake in ITR filing? No need to file revised ITR; check out this new feature
ITR filing season: If you have made a mistake in your ITR then there is a new option called 'Discard ITR'. You can easily make changes by using this option.
There are only a few days left to file the income tax return (ITR) as the last date for ITR filing is July 31 for the financial year 2024. Everyone eligible for an ITR is busy with that, and making a mistake in filing an ITR is quite possible. To correct this error, earlier before FY 2022-23, we had only one option i.e. 'revised ITR'. But now, the income tax department has started a new option which is 'discard ITR'.
Let's know about this feature and how to use it.
What is the 'Discard ITR' feature?
If you have made a mistake in your ITR then there is a new option called 'Discard ITR'. You can easily make changes by using this option.
When you can use this new feature
You can only use this feature if you have not verified your ITR. If you have verified your ITR, then you can only use the option of 'Revised ITR'.
How to discard your ITR
First of all, go to the ITR website and go to e-verify return under Income Tax Returns under the e-File tab. After this, a webpage will open, where you will see the unverified ITR. Here you will get two options. The first will be e-Verify and the second will be Discard. You have to click on Discard, after which your ITR will be cancelled and you can file a new ITR again.
There is a change that the Discard option is not available for some people on the e-Verify page. If you also do not see the discard option, then you can adopt another method. Under this, you will first have to go to the e-File tab and click on View Filed Returns there. After this, you will see the option of e-Verify, click on that. After this, you will be redirected to the e-Verify page and there you will get the discard option.
