Bhai Dooj Bank Holiday: With the onset of the festive season, banks remained closed, in most parts of the country, over the weekend and on Monday. While banks are open in several parts of the country today, they will remain closed in some parts of the country on Wednesday i.e. on October 26 on the occasion of Bhai Dooj.
It is worth mentioning that the holiday will be under 'Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act'. For the uninitiated, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) put holidays under three brackets - Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act, Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

October 26: Banks in Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Dehradun, Gangtok, Jammu, Kanpur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Shimla and Srinagar to remain closed on October 26 on the occasion of 'Govardhan Pooja/Vikram Samvat New Year Day/Bhai Bij/Bhai Duj/Diwali (Bali Pratipada)/Laxmi Puja/Accession Day'.

What is Bhai Dooj?
Bhai Dooj is a festival that is celebrated on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha of Hindu calendar month Kartik. It is a day to celebrate the pious bond between a brother and a sister.
On this day, sisters perform the auspicious 'tika' ceremony and pray for a long and happy life of thier brothers, who in retrun offer them gifts.
As per the RBI's list of holidays for banks in October 2022, there are 21 bank holidays. This also includes second Saturday and all Sundays. Apart from four bank holidays this week, there will be one more bank holiday left for this month. The last bank holiday of October will on the 31st. Banks falling under the regional offices of Ahmedabad, Patna and Ranchi will remain closed on 31st October 2022 for 'Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Birthday/Surya Pashti Dala Chhath (Morning ardhya)/Chhath Puja.'

Is Bhai Dooj a government holiday?
According to the list of holidays issued by the Central Government, Bhai Dooj is not a government holiday. As per the list, Republic Day, Independence Day, Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday, Buddha Purnima, Christmas Day, Dussehra, Diwali, Good Friday, Guru Nanak's Birthday, Idul Fitr, Idul Zuha, Mahavir Jayanti, Muharram and Prophet Mohammad's Birthday are holidays for Central government.
