Bank Holiday on Holi: Private and public sector banks are closed on March 7 and 8 on account of Holi in some states, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) bank holiday list. Notably, bank holidays differ depending on the state. In few states or cities, banks will remain closed on March 9 as well. In total, banks will remain closed for as many as 12 days in the month of March.

There are two categories of bank holidays: national holidays and government holidays. Three national holidays are observed in India: 1) Republic Day; 2) Independence day and 3) Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. Gazetted holidays are another name for national holidays. On national holidays, banks and other financial institutions are closed.

State government bank holidays and central government bank holidays are additional categories for government holidays. While bank holidays for the central government are generally celebrated throughout the nation, state government bank holidays vary among Indian states. Maharashtra observes Maharashtra Day as a bank holiday. Bank holidays are observed on both Goa Liberation Day in Goa and Haryana Day in Haryana.

Other than Holi, there are five more holidays left in March for banks. These include March 11 (Second Saturday), March 12 (Sunday), March 19 (Sunday), March 25 (Fourth Saturday) and March 26 (Sunday).
