Stock market today: The bulls were all over the place on Dalal Street on Monday, June 3 after exit polls predicted a massive win for the BJP-led NDA in the Lok Sabha polls. Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty surged to close over three per cent higher.

Amid broad-based buying, the 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 2507.47 points or 3.39 per cent to hit a record peak of 76,468.78 after scaling an all-time high of 76,738.89. The NSE Nifty rallied 733.2 points or 3.25 per cent to settle at a record 23,263.9, after scaling a fresh all-time high of 23,338.7. 

Among the Nifty companies, 43 stocks were advancing while 7 stocks were declining. Adani Ports, State Bank of India, NTPC, Power Grid, and ONGC led the gains in the Nifty 50 universe while Eicher Motors, LTI Mindtree, HCL Tech, Sun Pharma, and Asian Paints were the top decliners. 

The domestically focussed Nifty SmallCap 100 and Nifty MidCap100 were up 2.41 per cent and 3.19 per cent, respectively.

The high-beta Nifty Bank index, whose 12 constituents include SBI, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank finished 4.07 per cent or 1,996 points higher at 50,979.95. The index surpassed the 51,000 level during the session.

The counting of votes will take place tomorrow, June 4.

India's economy grew by 8.2 per cent in the fiscal year that ended in March, cementing the country's position as the fastest-growing major economy in the world.

Global Market

European shares advanced on Monday, tracking gains in Asian equities, as investors braced for a key interest rate decision from the European Central Bank (ECB) later this week.

Last see, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.55 per cent, extending gains for the third straight session.
