Stock market today: Benchmark equity indices rebounded on Friday, May 31 to settle in green territory with caution setting in ahead of the outcome of the Lok Sabha Elections next week. The 30-share BSE Sensex closed at 73,961.31, up 75.71 points or 0.1 per cent. Halting the five-day losing streak NSE Nifty 50 went up by 42.05 points or 0.19 per cent to settle at 22,530.7.

Among the Nifty companies, 26 stocks were advancing while 24 stocks were declining. From the Nifty 50 basket, Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, Shriram Finance, Coal India, and Tata Motors Steel were the major gainers. On the contrary, Divi's, Nestle India, LTI Mindtree, Dr Reddy, and Maruti were among the laggards.

The domestically focussed Nifty SmallCap and Nifty MidCap100 were up 0.5 and 0.5 per cent, respectively.

The high-beta Nifty Bank index, whose 12 constituents include SBI, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank finished 0.62 per cent or 301.6 points higher at 48,983.95.

The last phase of polling is scheduled for June 1. The results of the ongoing general elections will be declared on June 4. Also in focus will be the fourth-domestic quarter GDP data due later in the day.

Global Market

World shares were mixed on Friday after an official survey showed Chinese factory activity weakening in May on slowing export orders. US futures were little changed and oil prices slipped ahead of an OPEC meeting this weekend.
